Extreme sport athlete Herbert Seimetz about Peronin
Peronin – The Key Ingredient?!
For those going on long treks, taking on extreme challenges and who have a willingness to go beyond the limits of what is humanly possible, what is required along with the right attitude, a great deal of experience and the correct equipment, is most importantly a cleverly thought-out strategy to quickly and entirely restore used energy. In addition, during the Arctic winter, correct nutrition is a decisive factor, not only with regard to the success or the failure of a project, but basically for a person's survival in general. The largest problem has to date always been the tremendous amount of weight involved in transporting the amount of food, which was needed for undertakings of this magnitude lasting several weeks.
During the winter of 2004/2005, when I ventured on my Lapland crossing, a 1000 km journey I undertook on my own, for the first time ever I had Peronin with me – a few bags to sample. After merely a few days, during which I myself was able to experience the benefits of this kind of nutrition, it was clear to me that there would be one huge problem less to consider on my future tours. Having a high-quality "meal" at hand quickly is of existential significance in the Arctic. I know of no other option that can fulfil this challenge even anywhere near as well as Peronin can. In just a few minutes, a good quality stove is able to melt enough snow in order to prepare the warm quality drink (lukewarm water is all you need).
In this regard, there are numerous positive advantages:
- Peronin, because it is a powder, is very lightweight and contains everything needed by the human body to perform at its highest capacity without any deficiency symptoms, even for longer periods of time.
- Energy is unharnessed directly with the result that very specific nutritional effects can be achieved during long tours.
- The fact that, in comparison to all other food types, all you need to prepare Peronin is lukewarm water you save a tremendous amount of fuel – a very significant issue.
- Even after several weeks, I still enjoy the flavours chocolate and vanilla so that not even the taste caused any problems.
In the meantime, I have undertaken quite a number of ventures, which have also been under extreme conditions, using Peronin as a source of nutrition. The experiences I have had with this "magic powder" have made me a firm believer and an absolute fan.
A few figures of note in combination with Peronin:
Dec. 2004 / Jan. 2005 Lapland crossing, 1000 kilometres (alone, with no support, polar night, using Peronin for the first time);
July 2005 – "500 Kilometre Marathon" along with Oliver Lechtenfeld through four Alpine countries (6.5 days, 450 km / 20,000 Hm, relying on ourselves entirely for care without any outside support, Swiss Alpine as the tailpiece, means of nutrition: Peronin);
Feb. 2006 Pulka expedition, Inari Lake crossing, Kirkenes, Murmansk, Bokfjord Peninsula, (with Oliver L, without any care or support from the outside world, means of nutrition for the most part: Peronin);
July / August 2006 Crossing the Alps from east to west on bicycle from Vienna to Grenoble (9 days, 6 hours 32 minutes, alone with no support, 1678 km, 16 mountain passes and roads similar to mountain passes, nutritional means: Peronin);
Feb. 2007 Greenland, Arctic-Circle-Trail 160 km; continued on to the inland ice / back to Kangerlussuaq 50 km (with Oliver L., in this case as well, not support, main source of nutrition: Peronin);
Conclusion: After many extreme years with standard and trekking food, Peronin has convinced me entirely with its many advantages and I am absolutely enthusiastic about it. In April 2008, Oliver and I will begin another 1100 km crossing of Greenland. You do not need to be a prophet to guess what our meal plan will look like. Of course, during this tour, we will also make due without any support from the outside world that we estimate will take us around seven weeks, which, because of the extremely heavy sled, would hardly be possible without Peronin.
